Registration begins 8:30am. WHERE: Pima Community Campus, 401 North Bonita Avenue, Tucson, Arizona 85710, Room C116. PRESENTATION: Helping Clients Change. Isn’t that why we are in this field!? Come to two incredible days with Jim Bitter. Learn and practice highly demanded clinical skills, network, and enjoy breaks in the courtyard. Light breakfast and snacks are included – both days! Lunch is on your own. PRESENTER: Dr. Bitter is an author or a co-author of eight books and 45 book chapters. He presented nationally and internationally too many times to have an accurate count. He is a nationally certified counselor and nationally certified family therapist. Those who have experienced him as a teacher say that he brings energy, wisdom, and knowledge to every teaching moment. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to: 1. Link emotional/behavioral presentation to lifestyle themes and processes; 2. Assess motivation for change 3. Link cognitive-emotional responses to interventions and treatment 4. Address symptom-reduction as well as engage in replacement therapy for a more functional life. SCHEDULE DAY ONE Morning Session 1 (9:00am-10:30am): Introduction to Adaptive Reorientation Therapy. 1. Forming relationships and Lifestyle Assessment 2. The Z Factor: The Quest to Feel Good 3. Differentiating the Z Factor from Compelling Emotion Morning Break (10:30-10:40) Morning Session 2 (10:40-12:10): 1. Counseling Demonstration with audience member. 2. Processing the Demonstration: A Discussion with the Audience (15 minutes) Lunch (12:10-1:20) Afternoon Session 1 (1:20-2:50): Understanding & Working with Emotional States 1. Understanding the Stress – Distress – Anxiety – Anger – Depression Progression 2. Linking Emotions to Evolutionary Psychology 3. Linking Emotions to Lifestyle Themes Afternoon Break (2:50-3:00) Afternoon Session 2 (3:00-4:30): 1. Initial Session with Ongoing Client (best if this is a real client, but I can work with an audience member willing to do more than one session) 2. No change can happen until people stop embracing victimization 3. All change starts with an acceptance of things exactly the way they are Morning Break (10:30-10:40 minutes) Morning Session 2 (10:40-12:10): Counseling Demonstration #2 with Ongoing Client Processing the Demonstration: A Discussion with the Audience (15 minutes) Lunch (12:10-1:20) Afternoon Session 1 (1:20-2:50): Adaptive Reorientation in Action 1. Focusing on and working with symptom reduction 2. Developing a plan for replacement therapy: A new approach to life tasks 3. Encouragement, Reframing, Celebrating Improvement, Acknowledgement of Strengths, Validation of Experience, & Implementation of Social Interest: Resilience Applied Afternoon Break (2:50-3:00 minutes) Afternoon Session 2 (3:00-4:30): Final Session with Ongoing Client and Processing the Demonstration (15 minutes): A Discussion with the Audience Level of Training: This will be an advanced training in (a) forming a relationship; (b) conducting an initial interview using what Dreikurs (1997) called a subjective orientation; (c) conducting a lifestyle assessment or what Dreikurs called an objective orientation; and (d) developing a summary of lifestyle information, including an understanding of private logic (mistaken goals and notions) and the use of symptoms as purposeful strategies for living. The Model: The Adaptive Orientation Therapy (ART) model proposed by Dr. Paul Rasmussen (2005; 2010) will be used as a guide for facilitating change. Rasmussen’s model blends Adlerian theory and practice with evolutionary psychology. Focusing on the implementation of community feeling/social interest and the development of effectiveness in the life tasks, interventions are created to reorient people’s lives toward more productive and harmonious living.
